Summary for driving lessons during COVID-19

Additional guidance

Before each lesson

You must not undertake a driving lesson if you fall into any of these categories:

  • You or someone you live with has coronavirus symptoms. Check the GOV.UK COVID symptoms list beforehand
  • You’ve been told by the NHS Test and Trace service that you’ve been in contact with a person who has coronavirus
  • You have entered or returned to the UK in the last 14 days, except in very limited situations which can be found in the government’s travel exemptions. You can find out more information on the GOV.UK COVID-19 border rules.

Face coverings

Pupils and instructors must bring and wear a face covering during driving lessons, unless there is a good reason not to.

Reasons not to include:

  • You have a physical or mental illness or impairment, or a disability that means you cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering •
  • Putting on, wearing or removing a face covering would cause you severe distress •
  • You need to remove it during your test to avoid harm or injury or the risk of harm or injury to yourself or others.

There is a possibility of glasses/eye protection fogging up. Where issues arise with this on lessons, ensure you safely resolve the problem. If you are not able to wear a face covering, you must inform your instructor in advance of the lesson.

Wearing the face covering:

  • Put the face covering on ensuring you cover your mouth and nose, making sure there are no gaps between your face and the covering and taking care to tuck away any loose ends
  • Avoid touching the covering while using it. If you do, either wash your hands with soap and water, if available, or use hand sanitiser while in the lesson
  • For pupils wearing glasses and a face covering, you should be aware of the increased possibility of glasses/eye protection fogging up. Where issues arise with this on lessons, make sure you safely resolve the problem.

Further guidance on how to wear and make your own cloth face covering can be found on gov.uk.

Vehicle cleanliness and ventilation

Your vehicle will be cleaned in advance of your lesson using anti-viral spray or wipes to clean the passenger door handles inside and outside, the dashboard n any other touch points (e.g. steering wheel, sat nav, mirror). Your instructor will make sure the vehicle is ventilated appropriately throughout the lesson.

Passengers

No additional passengers will be permitted on your lessons during this time.

Disposing of PPE

While not mandatory, if you choose to wear single-use gloves you should read HSE guidance on removal of single-use gloves. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves and anti-viral wipes, must be disposed of separately to general waste. PPE must be disposed of and double bagged daily.

Dispose of the PPE using normal collection methods at least 72 hours after the items were used.

Symptom free self-declaration:

You have to agree to the Terms & Conditions in order to continue with your driving lessons.
